One of the most important roles for a Team Leader is to nurture and develop their team members. It is important that the Team Leader:
Spend time and effort helping your team, always put your team first. Help the team learn from one another's mistakes, putting structure in place to avoid the same mistakes happening again. Be a chameleon changing your leadership style to best serve each team member, play to their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses. Provide your team with clear direction, goals and objectives, providing balanced constructive feedback as needed. Create a fun, productive, proactive, solution focused working environment. Pick up when your team members need help without having to ask, read their emotions and body language, offer to help. Daily morning meetings happen consistently with solid structure and direction. Team duties are consistently implemented and actioned effectively.
Brainstorm some solutions with the team and put measures in place to avoid going forward. You will be required to conduct performance reviews, training and implement disciplinary actions if needed.
Team members should be asked to provide input, however the final decision is up to the Leader. Team members must feel their input is valued and not taken lightly. Team Leaders need to be able to identify problems that people may be having and help them over come them. Brightness of the future for the team is important for the Team Leader to develop, keep your team passionate and engaged about their roles. Having accurate budgets/goals and updating them is vital. Having a business goal and plan that everyone has bought into is essential.
The Team Leader must consult however your priority is your team, as a result your portfolio should be smaller ideally with low maintenance clients so that you have ample time to help and develop your team. As your team grows your portfolio should become smaller ensuring you always have time to work on the business rather than in the business.
