US visitors to pay for Esta

VISITORS to the United States may soon have to pay at least US$10 to complete the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) before travelling. This follows the passing of the Travel Promotion Act by the US Senate.

It is said that a Corporation for Travel Promotion for the US will be set to promote it as a tourist destination and to provide information for visitors and travel professionals overseas.

The corporation will be funded by the charge for visitors, which will be put towards a Travel Promotion Fund.

This is known to be the first national travel promotion and communications program signed by US President Barack Obama.

The Act was signed into law on March is in response to evidence that the US was losing out to other countries in the global travel market.
